I've known your work for ten years so it's been a real pleasure visiting the revised format website - especially since there's a sneak preview of your newer work.

It's such an incredible body of photography - never intrusive or contrived, always sensitive to the subject and beautifully executed. Even after so long, I never tire of your images and discover new things to enjoy everytime I revisit them. That's a very rare talent.

I can't wait to own the book.

I took a tour of your photography Web site - awesome photography (I am very partial to the landscapes!)

I am glad people with your talent share with those of us trying to make the next shot better than the last!

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your images on the web. I am trying to get an assisting job in London at the moment, and not having much luck, feeling deflated. But have been inspired.

Thanks,

Dear Sir,

I was surfing the net looking for photos about Maramures and had a look at your page. As I was born in Maramures and as I am also a photographer you'll understand my interest. But I am afraid that you won't like my comment.

Instead of the country and people I love and can offer very good photography opportunities, I found photos with beggars in the street, with kids in hospitals, all the junk the media love when it comes to Romania. Needles to say that these photos could have been taken in any other country in the East Europe or in Cuba, Bangladesh as well. This is very sad because when it comes to photography you seem to know quite well your job...

Yours,
Virgil Mlesnita

Hi Toby,

First of all I like to say "what a great site" so many pictures. I have seen some good ones. But I got a tip, your information button(left side)should be on the right side, beside the "next" button. I makes it more easier instead going from left to the right and left again and so on.

And now I question for you, the black lines around your pictures are these the orginal lines from the negatives? I like to know how you get them in. Is that with a large scanner? Please can you explain.

Thanks for your help and good luck.

Jeroen

I particular love black & white photography and have stumbled accross your photos. They are stunning! You see the world in such a wonderful way. It's not often that you find an entire portfolio that "speaks" to you, but I think I've found it. My husband and I have both worked in the corporate world for several years but are beginning to focus on the artistic side of life. We have just started a very small photography company and I hope that we can create a life such as yours.

Thank you for the inspirational photos...I will pass this site along to all of my friends.

Hello, I really admire your photographs! I am a photography student from Birmingham, and at the moment I am doing a black and white landscape project for the R.S.P.B (bird sanctuary). I was wondering if I could use your photographs for my research for my sketchbook work? How did you get your photographs to come out so well and contrasted, cause mine have so far come out really grey!

Toby, I saw a review of your site in B+W Photography Magazine and have only just got around to investigating !

Congratulations - a very accesible site and corking photographs , of course. I particularly enjoy your landscapes.

Sorry to see you're not able to make a full - time living from it , I hope the plug from B+W Mag will benefit. I'm interested ,as I was for five years a professional photographer , but got stuck in the London rut and left to become a modelmaker. I've been living in deepest , darkest Wales for over ten years now but looking to get back into photography , particularly B+W in a modest way.

I wish you the recognition you deserve and best wishes for the future,

yours sincerely,

James Mansfield

Toby, what an interesting portfolio. I especially liked the Romanian photos, mybe because as a child my parents took me there for summer holidays (I'm Eastern European by birth, now American). I like the full frame printing, do it myself from time to time. I saw your link at photo.net. If you're free take a peek at my little portfolio there. Best regards.

Followed the link here from ePHOTOzine. I've only looked at the landscape portfolio so far (as landscape photography is my main interest) and I'm impressed. Some stunning images.

I'm currently studying B&W photography and part of the course is looking at other photographers. If it's okay, I'd like to include some of your images and a bit of info about them in my workbook. I hope to come back soon and look at your other portfolios. As for the site. I like the design and layout. Just a little slow.

You have an extraordinary eye! Good luck with being self-sufficient as a photographer. If talent has anything to do with it, I have no doubts it will come...

Greetings Toby,

While I was searching through the internet looking for sites with black and white photography I stumbled on your site and was very rewarded. I just wanted to say that your collections of photos are brilliant, I'm sure I dont have to tell you this. I love your potraits and landscape. They are very well done and honest. I love
F11-35B.

I just bought my first SLR about two weeks ago and have been shooting and reading since. I have always been a closeted photographer at heart, but could never afford the money to actually by a real camera until now. I love photographers like Bruce Weber, H. Ritts and Greg Gorman. I could say that I love Ansel Adams as well, but that's so typical I guess, lololol.

I was wondering if you can help me by answering just a couple of questions not only about photography in general. First, how did you get those kids to let you take those pictures and how fast do you have to react to get those shots? What about all the technical aspects of photgraphy...how did you know what speed, etc...to use at some of those candit shots? And lastly, how much manipulation did you do in the darkroom with some of the photographs.

I read part of your CV where you stated that you hav traveled quite exstensively. That's amazing to hear. I'm from the States and have only traveled abroad for about six months. I'm dying to get back on the road not only to discover different cultures but to shoot as well.

Thank you for your time and for sharing your gift with the world.

Tien Pham

Great photos on this website, and I like the way you have set up the site as well. I am the webmaster and editor at The Long Trip Home, an online literary magazine for travelers, and I'm always surfing the net to see what all is out there in terms of travel writing and travel photography. Your stuff is quite exceptional. Check out The Long Trip Home if you're interested in submitting, but unfortunately we don't offer compensation.

Anyway, keep up the great photography. Wow.

Toby, I love your images.

You have also inspired me to continue with my own work.

I'm going to save up some piss weak Australian dollars so I can buy one of your prints very soon.

I've only had the chance to see some of your work but I look forward to coming back to the site to see some more.

Thanks!

Hi, just a practical matter re sales. I've no idea what 175 pounds is in US dollars. It would be helpful to those of us over here to know that exactly. Perhaps people in Europe have their thumb on the pulse of other currencies - alas, we're so alone over here. (Canada? Mexico? OK, no excuses.)

I liked your site except the background color of your pages, though I know others who like that color very much.

Lastly, I'm thinking of having a site made for my work by a friend. I'm wondering if it is even worth organizing the site for sales -- I would really like to know if you and other photographers who aren't yet famous (no offense) are selling anything from their websites. For that matter, I wonder how much the famous and well established professionals are making in sales from their own sites. Have you looked into this at all? Is there any info source in some photographer's business organization that would have data on this question?

Again, I enjoyed your work and plan to return to your site when I have more time to look again.

George Ollen

PS A last wish: that your images were larger on screen

I was just at the forum of ephotozine because I was bored, and came across your post. Can only say visiting your site made the day a hole lot more fun, WOW great shots really fantastic. Anyway just spend the last hour looking at your site, and the design is really good. There is just one thing that I would like to point out, the way from the frontpage to the pictures is to long, but all in all ai can only say WOW. So do keep up the great work.

Hi Toby, Just picked up your URL from luminous-landscapes.com and I thought I'd take a look. Having seen your lanscape portfolio, I felt that you had some nice images. However, you obviously excel at documentary. Perhaps this is because you are at your most astute around people? Me, Im a novice at photography (5 months), although I did have a submission accepted by Michael at Luminous-landscape in January 2002 . Anyway, hope my feedback has been of interest to you.

Very much impressed with your photos and the site, Toby. No less than I would expect from my association with your brilliant (I assume)father, David, in our AXLE magazine in the early sixties: you obviously take after him. Very best of luck.

WOW, these pictures are amazing! I love this site, the layout is excellent as are the pictures. I spent 2 weeks in Canada and loved the scenery there so as you can imagine, I love your shots. I have read other people's comments here and was going to put a link to my basic website but after seeing this site (and the ones linked by other posters here), I would feel a little embarrased by the quality of my work so I wont.

I was thinking about experimenting with black & white though and this has been a great insporation to me so I thank you :) And please, keep up the (very) good work.

Best Wishes, Richard

Thanks Toby. The site looks very interesting - but why have you made the pictures so small? And it's hard to navigate through the subjects without trawling through the whole lot. Having said that, you've got a great eye and there are some stunning pictures in there.

Don't be downhearted by my reservations and keep up the good work. JP

This is some of the strongest black and white landscape work I have seen in this generation. Your design sense and shape construct are impeccable, and I get a distinct feeling of temperature in each of your (especially the trails portfolio) prints which marks you as a master of tonality. Bravo! I look forward to seeing your portraiture when it becomes available.

.....Some beautiful images, really lovely. Why you want to work in TV I'll never know. I thought F16-15A was amazing - very dramatic, and also liked F07-16A (don't you have poncy names for them) but my favourite (at the moment) is F13-18A as it reminds me of snow in the tree lined slopes of the Aussie Alps...Have you been to New Zealand yet? Stunning landscape, you'd go mad! (I did) Such fantastic light and just plain unusual topography. Anyway I won't go on just in case you've already been there.

I'm very impressed with your photographs. I'm new to the web and love B&W images. I've just converted to digital after spending millions of hours in a darkroom. I'll be using a film scanner and hopfully getting top quality results
(my research proves this is so). Then going on the web to exhibit. Your photo's are the best so far of all the sites I've visited. Good work

Hi Toby, Good to hear from you again. I have just spent a while at your web site. It is very well organised and clearly explained - must have taken a time to get it all together. How long has it been running? Have you sold any as a result of it?

There were a number of familiar images and several which I had not seen before. You have got a good range of work and although you are happiest with landscape I think the documentary ones are really you. The landscapes are often good, well seen, well composed, powerful, atmospheric, etc. but some of the documentary ones are more innovative and have a marvellous freshness which comes as a result of the instant decision - 'the decisive moment'. That is a great strength to possess....
